Where Were We?

Another couple of great days “Tackling the Trent”.  As we left Hastings headed for Peterborough, I found out right away how important it is to not be colour blind in a waterway.  About 3 minutes out of the marina I looked away from the “track” for about 15 seconds and found myself on the wrong side of the markers.  A quick left turn and a few bumps on the keel got us back in the channel and we were on our way.  This did not instill a whole lot of crew confidence, but nonetheless skipper was inspired to pay more intention to where the hell we are at all times from here on in. (Pinky Swear!).

We found our way through Rice Lake, the first time we were really out of a buoyed channel since Trenton.  Given the excitement in paragraph one, the navigator was ever vigilant getting us through the lake and into Peterborough Marina and off the boat for a couple of days with Chris, Tino and their pooch Riley at their lovely summer home on Clear Lake.  It was a great time catching up on all and sundry, tasting Tino’s award-winning vintages and getting a night’s sleep in a real bed.  The captain actually was up before the skipper!

Peterborough to Youngs Point Locks on Tuesday brought us to the Peterborough Lift Lock, an engineering marvel that brings boats up a total of 65 feet (19M) in water-filled chambers.  I suggest Googling it, because our pictures don’t do it justice.  It was really neat!

We toodled along through the Trent Canal, past Trent University and into Youngs Point.  a lovely quiet spot.  We spent the evening trying to figure out how to adjust our itinerary to get us to some place that will be having a Canada Day celebration, since our original plan has us in Gamebridge Lock, not exactly Parliament Hill.  We settled on doubling our pace and skipping Buckhorn today and headed on to Bobcaygeon, to see the constellations reveal themselves on star at a time (the Lock Master sung that Tragically Hip song for Cindy at the locks).  Tomorrow will likely mean we do some additional planning, however tonight we are comfortably ensconced on the upper wall in Bobcaygeon with about one hundred miles to Georgian Bay.  What a trip, here's some pics of the last few days!
